A six-hour private minivan tour of Phuket costs 4,500 THB without a guide and 6,500 THB with a guide. That is the price per vehicle for up to 10 people, not per head. Half the stops on a typical route are free: entry to the Big Buddha and Wat Chalong costs nothing, and neither does parking.

How much does a Phuket sightseeing tour cost?

There are essentially two formats, and they are priced differently.

A private air-conditioned minivan for 6 hours, up to 10 passengers, runs 4,500 THB without a guide (the driver simply takes you along the route) and 6,500 THB with a guide. The route is usually built from the Big Buddha, Wat Chalong, Phuket Old Town, Promthep Cape and the Karon viewpoint. Sometimes Nai Harn and Cape Panwa are added.

Budget match

We will shortlist properties for your budget

Pick a range and we will send a shortlist with prices, layouts and payment plans within 24 hours.

A group city tour of 5 hours starts from 40 USD per person, converted to baht at the day's rate. The price includes hotel pickup, a guide and elephant feeding. A full day with a stop at Tiger Park starts from 50 USD per person. Groups are small, up to 15 seats, with pickups from Patong, Kata and Karon.

The pricing logic is simple. If there are three or more of you, take a private van without a guide. For a group of four that works out to about 1,125 THB per person, you decide how long to linger at each viewpoint, and nobody steers you into a latex shop. A guide for an extra 2,000 THB only makes sense if you are genuinely interested in the stories of the tin barons and Buddhist symbolism.

If there are two of you, you do not drive and you are staying in Patong, a group tour is honestly cheaper.

For context, other operators price comparable city tours lower per head. A premium small-group city tour without shopping stops (about 7 hours, up to 8 people, covering the Big Buddha, Karon Viewpoint, Windmill Viewpoint, Promthep Cape, Wat Chalong and 90 minutes of free time in Phuket Old Town) is listed at 1,790 THB per adult. A 6-hour half-day city highlights tour with a guide starts from $38. Both are shared formats, so compare them with the group option above, not with a private van.

Big Buddha and Wat Chalong: free entry, but a few caveats

The Big Buddha is a 45-metre statue of white Burmese marble on Nakkerd Hill. The platform gives a 360-degree view over Chalong Bay, Kata and Karon. Entry and parking are free, and donations are voluntary: a marble tile with your name starts from 100 THB. Opening hours are roughly 6:30 to 18:30, but sources differ, so do not gamble on a sunset visit.

One detail many people miss: the site was closed after a landslide in 2024 and reopened on 3 March 2026. Some tour operators still carry a note in their descriptions about possibly swapping the stop for another viewpoint. If the Big Buddha is your main goal, ask before you pay.

The dress code is standard for a temple: shoulders and knees covered, with sarongs available on site. Allow 45 to 60 minutes. There is almost no shade, so go before 10:00 or after 16:00. At midday it is simply stifling.

Wat Chalong sits at the foot of the same hill and is considered the island's main temple, with murals, a gilded pagoda and a relic hall. Entry is free. The two sites combine naturally into one morning, with about ten minutes of driving between them.

Phuket Old Town: what to see on your own

Nobody charges you to walk Thalang, Dibuk and Yaowarat roads. The Sino-Portuguese shophouses were built on the proceeds of the 19th-century tin boom. Today they hold coffee shops, small museums, boutiques and street art in the courtyards.

The best time is Sunday from 16:00 to 22:00, when Thalang Road closes to traffic for a walking market with food, craftspeople and live music. It is free, lively and delicious.

This is also the main complaint about group tours: they usually pass through the Old Town by bus with a short photo stop, in the heat of midday when half the cafes are closed. The market is still four hours away and the bus is leaving. The Old Town is best explored on foot and in the evening, independently or with a rental car for a day or two.

What in the tour package is not worth the money

Not everything on the itinerary is a real attraction.

  • A photo with a tiger at Tiger Park. This is just a surcharge for a picture, and many people have questions about animal welfare there. It is your call, but it is not sightseeing.
  • Five-minute elephant feeding. It sounds great in the description, but in practice it is a short stop with bananas.
  • Quiz games and a free souvenir. Marketing dressed up as value.
  • A second viewpoint with the same view. Karon, Promthep and the windmill give almost identical pictures. One is enough unless you are chasing sunset light.

The flip side: in a city tour you are really paying only for transfer and logistics. The Big Buddha, Wat Chalong, the viewpoints and the Old Town are all free. So the question is not which tour is best, but how much you are willing to pay to avoid driving yourself.

FAQ

Is the Big Buddha open right now?

Yes. The site reopened on 3 March 2026 after the landslide closure. Some tours still mention a possible replacement stop, so confirm with the operator.

How much does it cost to enter the Big Buddha and Wat Chalong?

Nothing. Entry and parking are free, and donations are voluntary: a named marble tile starts from 100 THB.

When does the Sunday market in Phuket Old Town run?

On Sundays along Thalang Road from 16:00 to 22:00. Walking in is free, and you only pay for food and souvenirs.

Which is cheaper: a group tour or a private minivan?

For two people, a group tour is cheaper (from 40 USD per person for 5 hours). From three people up, the private van wins: 4,500 THB for 6 hours is split among everyone.

How long should I allow for the Big Buddha?

45 to 60 minutes for the climb, a walk around the platform and photos. Arrive before 10:00 or after 16:00, as there is almost no shade.

One last tip: build your route in reverse. Do the temples and the Big Buddha in the morning, rest in the afternoon, and save the Old Town for the evening. You will see the same places as on a 6,500 THB tour, but at the time of day that suits them best.
