Plan on 40,000-60,000 THB per month per person for a winter in Thailand, covering a studio or one-bedroom, food, a scooter and a phone plan. The season runs from 1 November to 30 April, with the most stable weather from mid-November through March. Roughly half of the budget goes on housing.
Monthly budget by category (Phuket)
This is an average month in Phuket for one person in furnished housing, with utilities billed separately by meter:
- Studio or 1-bedroom: 15,000-30,000 THB
- Food: 15,000-25,000 THB
- Scooter rental: 3,000-4,000 THB
- Utilities, SIM, internet: 2,000-4,000 THB
A frugal setup looks different. A 25 sq m studio in Chalong or Rawai runs 12,000-18,000 THB, home-cooked food costs 8,000-12,000 THB, a bike is 3,000 THB plus fuel, and connectivity and entertainment add 2,000-4,000 THB. That brings the total close to 30,000 THB. The catch: these rates come with contracts of six months or longer, not a four-month winter stay.

In dollars, local estimates for 2026 look like this: from $1,700 per month per person for a modest lifestyle, $2,800-4,200 for a comfortable one (better housing, taxis instead of a bike, restaurants), and from $5,600 for a pool villa with staff.
For comparison, OneEx puts a one-bedroom in central Phuket at 24,000 THB per month, with a total monthly budget of about 43,000 THB for one person on an economy plan and about 70,000 THB on a mid-range plan. For two people, OneEx estimates roughly 62,000 THB (economy) and 115,000 THB (mid-range). Room-Number.ru gives a comfortable range of 35,000-70,000 THB per month for one person, excluding flights.
Where to stay: Phuket or Pattaya
Rents differ far more than the weather does.
In Phuket, a sea-view one-bedroom near the coast costs 25,000-40,000 THB, while a similar apartment on the second line or inland is 15,000-20,000 THB. In Phuket Town a one-bedroom can be found for 8,000-15,000 THB, the most affordable area on the island. Bang Tao and Laguna sit at the other end of the scale, where rates rose by about 15% over 2025.
In Pattaya and Jomtien the same money buys more space. A modern condo without a sea view costs 10,000-25,000 THB, very basic options start from 6,000 THB, and a sea-view one-bedroom is 20,000-35,000 THB. Winter temperatures are 28-32°C with dry air by the sea, Bangkok is a couple of hours away by road, and private clinics are cheaper than on the island.
For a first winter on a budget of up to 40,000 THB per month all-in, Jomtien or Phuket Town with Chalong makes more sense than the beachfront showcase areas. Four months of housing savings more than cover the cost of the flight. This advice is not for those who need to walk to the water and are happy to pay an extra 10,000-15,000 THB per month for it. For them, Rawai, Nai Harn or Bang Tao are the places to look.
How long to stay and when to book
December and January are the busiest and most expensive part of the season. If you start searching in late November for a 20 December move-in, you will not see the figures above: only nightly rates and whatever nobody else has taken will be left.
The most common mistake is living in a hotel for the whole winter. Five months in an average Pattaya hotel costs 9,000-13,000 EUR for a single guest, while renting a condo for the same period is noticeably cheaper.
The lowest rates, the 8,000-15,000 THB studios, go with contracts of 6-12 months. A pure winter lease of 4-5 months is priced higher, understandably, because the landlord loses the next year's high season. Sometimes a six-month lease works out better than a four-month one.
Stay and extension rules change more often than rental prices. Check the terms on the official immigration website before buying tickets.
How to rent for the season without overpaying
The main trick is simple: ask for a monthly rate rather than adding up nights. Directly from an owner, the monthly price is usually lower than through short-stay booking platforms, sometimes significantly.
Before signing, do the following:
- Clarify what is included and what is billed separately (electricity is almost always metered, water and internet depend on the agreement)
- Fix the deposit amount, prepayment and refund terms in the contract
- View the apartment in person, not just in photos: construction and road noise do not show up in pictures
- Ask about air conditioning: electricity bills rise noticeably in March and April
A workable plan for a first winter: book a hotel for the first 7-10 days and look for housing on the ground, walking through the neighborhoods. In a week you will see five to eight options and understand which area suits you in reality, not which one was photographed nicely.
The price of this convenience is nightly rates in December. That is why it is better to scout in early November or in October, before the season picks up speed.

FAQ
How much does a winter in Thailand cost for two people?
Housing barely changes, while food and transport go up. On top of the base 40,000-60,000 THB, add roughly 15,000-25,000 THB for the second person's food and small expenses.
When is the best time to arrive for the winter?
The most stable weather runs from mid-November through March. December and January are the peak for prices and crowds, while February and March are calmer with the same weather.
Which is cheaper: Phuket or Pattaya?
Pattaya is cheaper at comparable comfort, mainly on rent: a condo without a sea view there starts from 6,000-10,000 THB, while comparable housing in Phuket costs more.
Do I need a scooter for the winter?
A scooter costs 3,000-4,000 THB per month and saves a lot on taxis. But if you have never ridden a two-wheeler, do not start in December on the road to the beach. It is better to choose an area where shops and the sea are within walking distance.
Can I rent housing in advance from abroad?
Yes, but for months ahead it is usually at an inflated rate. The compromise: book the first few weeks, and sign a long contract once you are there.
